A paper that gets A for effort – but IMHO the real conclusion is that exercise “science” doesnt know shit, there are 1000 ways to build your health, strength and body (and a million to ruin it) and I rather listen to the likes of Rippetoe, Pavel, Dan John, Louie Simmons etc whose evidence is doing it and training people.
The result seems to be ultra-biased towards “use machines / do HIT” with rather spurious arguments at times. For example, they used the number of emergency room admissions as a basis for their recommendation that machines are safer. Now, and emergency room admission is – whilst clearly unhealthy – a rare event and as such not necessarily representative. Moreover, I bet that the vast majority of ER visits in free-weight training is related to bench pressing (and, in any case, that even on a per-man-hour basis you have many more emergency visits by footballers etc).
The point is: it is very clear that in terms of ER visits machines are safer – pretty much the only accident that can happen is that you squeeze your fingers or toes, and you must be gifted even for that. The real health risk for resistance training is the repetitive-strain stuff, and if you can not assess this one, then IMV you should really refrain from making any recommendations…
Anyway – enough rant —- it is a good paper if you look at the evidence presented and make your own conclusions
